Reading Dragons and Friends

Reading Dragons and Friends is a card collecting game similar to Pokémon created by Dover Public Library. It serves as a fun way to motivate kids to build positive reading habits. This program levels the playing field for readers of any ability by rewarding them for the time they spend reading.
How does it work?
- Ask a librarian for a starter kit and starter cards.
- Color in eggs on the provided book tracker for each hour of reading.
- Show your reading tracker to a librarian to be initialed and earn more cards!
- Level up cards from eggs to adults.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to have a library card to participate?
Yes. The program is open to anyone with an active Whitewright Public Library card. Exceptions can be made for kids using their parent's card.
What do I have to read?
Anything you want! Books (this includes school books), audiobooks, graphic novels, magazines, etc. all count!
Does it count if I read to someone or with someone?
Yes, it counts for both readers.
Is there an age limit?
No, this program is available for ages kindergarten all the way to adult.
What if I damage or lose a card?
If a card is damaged (torn, issues with ink, etc.), bring it to the library to be replaced. We cannot replace lost cards.
Can siblings share a tracker?
No, every participant must have their own tracker.
What do I do when I complete my reading tracker?
Reading trackers are good for three months (January - March, April - June, July - September, October - December). If you finish your reading tracker before the three month period is over, you must wait for the next one to begin in order to get a new tracker.
Can I get cards from past events?
Maybe. After an event ends, we'll stop printing the cards. You're welcome to look into collecting them while supplies last. We can work with you if you happen to have any incomplete card families from the event.
Can I trade cards with others?
Yes! If a card comes from a family, you must trade the entire family. Please be fair in how you trade.
How can I play against others?
Existing games will be listed below. When playing with friends and family, you're free to make up your own.
